Languages at Slate School

World Languages are encouraged and taught at Slate School through both immersion and direct instruction. 25% of our families speak languages other than English in their home, and those students share their many languages with our community. Additionally, many of our students have explored languages for their independent projects, ranging from “The Languages of Oceania” to “New Zealand Sign Language”.

Our students engage in immersive Spanish learning starting in Kindergarten, supported by our Curator, Environmentalist, and Grade 5/6 Associate Teacher, who are all fluent Spanish speakers.

Spanish Immersion

Spanish is integrated throughout the curriculum. Starting in Kindergarten, students have morning enticements and Morning Meeting in Spanish once per week. In addition to reading the morning message in Spanish, children are immersed in conversation in Spanish, read books in Spanish, sing songs, and engage in other immersion opportunities.
