Diversity, equity, and inclusion are very important to us here at Slate School. With all of the really important discussion of diversity, equity, and inclusion, too few schools offer the kind of financial aid that makes true diversity and inclusion possible. We ensure that our unique and generous financial aid policy that eliminates financial barriers to attendance provides a real mechanism for openness and diversity among our students. We work hard to receive donations and grants to cover operating expenses so that we can ensure that finances are not a barrier to attending Slate School. This model has created an incredible opportunity for diversity among our student body. We are the only independent school in the country to provide need-blind admissions and to meet 100% of financial need for all of our students. Whereas most independent schools have operating budgets which are upwards of 90% covered by tuition revenue, at Slate School, tuition covers only 39% of the operating budget. This model has created an incredible opportunity for diversity among our student body. During the 2023-2024 academic year, more than 80% of our 67 students are receiving financial aid in the amount of $874,575. In our diverse population, more than 30% of our students identify as students of color, and 24% of our students and their families are bilingual, with several of those identifying English as a second language.
Our campus is a gift. When we look out the doors of Garden, we see two pillars that stand as a portal to the wider world. They stand tall to remind us of all that we can share beyond our Slate School borders. They also serve as a bridge to the past. These pillars were here before we ever arrived, and their presence is a constant tribute to every person who has cared for this land before us. We know that it is as it is because of the people who lived here before us, and before them, and before them, and before them. Our students are so grateful for the sacrifices that have been made for them. This gratitude nurtures a deep stewardship in the hearts of our students, a stewardship that we long to see in the wider world.
